Active substances are special chemical substances that are a component of cosmetics. Cosmetic products consist of basic raw materials and active ingredients. The latter have an active effect on the skin, so that it can be nourished, moisturized or rejuvenated. What exactly are these active substances and which of them are the most common? How do they work in the cosmetics used today?
What exactly are active substances?
Active substances are chemical substances that determine the strong effect of cosmetics. The effect to be achieved depends on the measure to be applied and the amount of the measure to be applied. Active substances are suspended in basic raw materials, which constitute a significant part of a given cosmetic product. Such raw materials include, among others, water, alcohol, dyes or fragrance compositions. This is the base where the active particles are found.
How do active substances work?
The action of active substances depends on their purpose. Some of them have nourishing and moisturizing functions, while others are designed to deal with free radicals, i.e. delay the aging processes of cells in the skin. Due to their function, active substances are divided into up to 3 groups. The first one includes substances acting on the surface of the skin and hair, which are most often intended to moisturize them and cover them with a protective layer. In the second group we find substances that work in deeper layers of the skin. The third group, on the other hand, are active substances that act at the cellular level. These include popular antioxidants, which are designed to neutralize free radicals.
What are the most popular active substances?
There are many active substances that are used in cosmetics. Among the most popular are retinol and coenzyme Q-10. The former is a pure form of vitamin A. It not only protects against free radicals, but also supports the regeneration of cells and stimulates the growth of new ones. Coenzyme Q-10 is an excellent antioxidant, which can also reduce swelling and enable the production of elastin and collagen. Popular active substances include phytohormones, carotenoids, idebenone (one of the strongest antioxidants) and anti-aging. The latter is a special preparation, composed of such elements as retinol, vitamin C and E, as well as coenzyme Q-10. Its action is therefore complex. In cosmetics you can find many minerals and vitamins that neutralize free radicals, the best of which are vitamins C, E and beta-carotene, which is a provitamin of vitamin A. It is also worth mentioning the evening primrose, which supports cell renewal and soothes irritations on the skin.
